Chandigarh, the perfect city can be easily summed up in three words: perfect, pristine, and Punjabi!
Since its inception, we have known there is no better place to live in than Chandigarh, the perfect city. Neatly planned and divided symmetrically, Chandigarh is nothing short of a utopia. And BBC agrees, for they have just named it the most perfect, ‘remarkable ideal’ city in the world.
In a story that the BBC ran, ‘Is this the perfect city?’, writer Jonathan Glancey takes us down its history and bares open its soul. He discusses how the planning, infrastructure, neighborhood and the amalgam of tradition and modernity makes Chandigarh a flawless metropolis.
Allow us to take you on a special walk through the City Beautiful.
#1 Named after Goddess Chandi, Chandigarh houses the ancient temple of the warrior deity in district Panchkula.
#2 A union territory, Chandigarh is capital to both Punjab and Haryana.
#3 The city was designed by French architect, Le Corbusier. It is the first planned city of India post-independence.
#4 Chandigarh and Panchkula don’t house Sectors 13, a number that marks in-auspiciousness.
#5 Chandigarh was also home to the Harappan civilization.
#6 The city’s official emblem, ‘Open Hand’ is a symbol for peace and reconciliation.
#7 Chandigarh is both the cleanest and the happiest city in India, according to two different surveys conducted in 2010 and 2015 respectively.
#8 It is also the first smoke-free city in the country.
#9 And we will all agree on this:
#10 The city of Chandigarh is planned to human scale. It puts in touch with the infinite cosmos and nature. It provides us with places and buildings for all human activities in which the citizens can live a full and harmonious life. Here the radiance of nature and heart are within our reach.
The truthfulness of materials of constructions, concrete, bricks and stone shall be maintained in all buildings and constructed or to be constructed.
The seed of Chandigarh is well sown. It is for the citizens to see that the tree flourishes -Mon Le Corbusier
We are sure there are a million more reasons that make Chandigarh a paradise on planet earth. Shout them out to us in the comments.
